The IP-addresses are allocated dynamically through DHCP with a very long lease time so it's not lost even if your VM is shut down for a few days. What IP address a certain VM will get depends on the MAC-address of the network interface which is fixed and doesn't change over reboots (unless you remove a network interface and add a new one in the Admin User Interface).

So, to answer your question, when cloning a VM, the new VM's network interface will have a new MAC-address and get a new IP-address. If you use cloning to make a "snapshot" of a VM as a backup everything will work fine except that the clone will get a new IP-address so changes in DNS will probably have to be made if you need to use the backup.

That is a very nice feature. But how does it work with the ip address? If I start both the original and the clone, will there be an ip address conflict? (Ubuntu)

Also, can I use this for a restore-like function. Like, if I do a clone just before I begin to install/change my virtual machine and then later realize that I've messed up my machine so much that I'd rather go back to what it looked like before I cloned it, could I remove the original and then use the clone instead? I guess the only problem I'd see with that is also related to how the ip address is handled?

All guarantees from hosting companies are always guarantees where you have some recourse should there be down time - i.e. money back. Read any larger companies guarantees and you will see the same - only difference is how much you get back. So it is quite standard in my opinion. So in this case we guarantee the up time - and since we did not deliver this month you are eligible for a credit. As per the email that went out to customers as well as the blog post we will refund 50% of this months fees. Our guarantee does not quite call for that much but as it was significant downtime we will give more as good will - in this very tough situation.

As you say - money back rarely means a lot to somebody - everybody wants the up time - not money back. However the guarantee cost us tons if we do go down so it is something that allows all our customers to know we will do all in our power not to go down.

So, for you to get 100% uptime(>99.99%) you cannot have any downtime during the following next 10 years, sounds like a good service :)

The uptime promise seems quite an misused measurement since it only guarantees the fees back. For serious business that can't really matter?

Great idea Daniele! We hope to engage the community around City Cloud quite a bit more during the fall of 2010. A new site and new functionality should help.

Prices will only go down from here. The plan is to be out of beta before end of the summer and prices will for sure not go up.

This is excellent news! Downtime like this is fully accepable when explained in such detail. I hope you keep this detailed update reports also in the future.

It would be great if you could put a feedback system online where customers can make visible feedback/feature requests and voting system for this. That will help us to influence what features to add and how you should prioritize them.

Btw, will you keep your prices low even after the Beta period is over?
